Breil and Its Chateau

The village of Breil is located about a kilometre away from Les Mousseaux and La Moussette.  It is an unremarkable rural hamlet, except for the fact that it is the site for a fine chateau and its gardens.

The region is justly famous for its numerous chateaux and splendid gardens; even the local inhabitants find it hard to visit them all. The region of Anjou itself has one thousand two hundred chateaux and great houses, with architectural styles dating back to the eleventh century. Visit Villandry for its gardens, Chambord for its immense size, and Usse for its connections with fairy tales.

La Moussette is half a kilometre from Breil where you will find the village's own chateau and historical gardens. "Le Parc du Lathan" covers 138 acres with both French and English styles of design. One unusual feature is an underground maze. (Recommended reading Michelin green guide "Châteaux of the Loire").

Hunting Fair
Once a year on August 15th , the Chateau at Breil hosts the Fete de la Chasse, a festival of country sports. This attracts around 20,000 people to Breil from all over France. You can sit on the banks of the river Lathan and watch jousting, horse and dog displays and listen to musical hunting horns sounding across the woodland. The Festival ends with a massive firework display and 'son et lumiere'.

Right:  Visit in June 2007 by the English Morgan Club to Breil during Le Mans week.
