Bird Watching and the Lac de Rille

Staying at 'La Moussette' you will be a few metres away from one of France's prime sites for birdwatching and wildlife: the 'Lac de Rillé' or Lac de Pincemaille.

A large part of the lake is an ornithological reserve and is has numerous migratory birds.  Around the lake can be seen terns, pied flycatchers, skylarks, buzzards, hoopoes, buntings, woodlark, black redstarts, tawny owls, goldfinches and oven the golden oriole. Nightingales visit us every spring.  In 2006 an osprey took up residence on the lake during the summer and autumn.

You will find more in our booklet about the Birds of the Lac de Rille or you can read more in English.

The Lake is also a well known spot for fishing, including night fishing.  It offers real sport with carp up to 20kg, the renowned 'silure' or European catfish which can be enormous, as well as pike, zander, black bass, roach, perch, and tench.  You can get more information from the local Federation de Peche and licences and permits can be obtained at the Gamme Vert in nearby Noyant.  For more details on fishing click on the fish below:

Le Petit Train

Another attraction on the lake is 'Le Petit Train á Vapeur' which operates around the shore of the lake near Rillé.  This steam train has been operating for decades and is very popular. For more details click the picture below or click here.

Walking and Cycling

At 'La Moussette' you will be on the edge of forest which stretches for kilometres and eventually leads down to the banks of La Loire itself.

Walking is a popular pastime locally and groups of 'randonneurs'  explore the various forest tracks and footpaths.  We have local maps which you can borrow to make your stay even better.
